It is a story that many addicts can relate to. Many of us are fine in The Matrix. Others taste the desire to face reality. Remember the character CYPHER, in the first installment of the movie? He desired to go back to a life of ignorance where he would no longer face the threats of Mr. Anderson or those machines. Kansas is familiar. The familiarity of The Matrix is how we addicts turn to when we really get messed up. Cypher didn’t want to be on a ship with crewmates anymore. We don’t want the same solutions being told to us of getting away from what we crave. He desired grander things. We want our fix to take care of things. It wants to remain CYPHER rather than to follow MORPHEUS. The price of familiarity comes at the expense of others. In our cases, it would be our families, friends, and people we choose to die with.
